Sarna graduated from the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) with Honours in 2008 and is enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi. He further enhanced his legal expertise with an Advanced LLM in European and International Human Rights Law from Universiteit Leiden, graduating Cum Laude and as co-Valedictorian in 2022.
Throughout his career, Sarna has demonstrated a deep commitment to constitutional and public law. He has appeared in landmark cases, including those challenging India’s sedition law, the reorganization of Jammu & Kashmir, and contested environmental legislation. He has represented government authorities, such as the Delhi Development Authority and the Union of India, and has extensive experience in Public Interest Litigations concerning environmental protections, land rights, and social justice issues.
As a specialist in freedom of speech and media law, Sarna has defended publishers, authors, and investigative journalism outlets in high-stakes defamation and censorship cases. Notably, he has recently successfully challenged publication injunctions in key cases concerning investigative exposés. His expertise extends to advising leading media houses—including The New York Times, Pan Macmillan, Penguin Random House, and Juggernaut Books—on copyright, privacy, defamation, and regulatory compliance.
In addition, Sarna’s commercial practice encompasses shareholder disputes, breach of contract, and domestic and international arbitration. He has represented major corporations in sectors such as energy, construction, and retail, handling complex disputes before Indian courts and tribunals. His work includes high-profile insolvency and corporate litigation, including significant franchisee shareholder disputes involving multinational companies.
Sarna has served as Of Counsel with Touchstone Partners and as External General Counsel for Fabindia, advising on legal compliance, contracts, and litigation. His prior work experience includes roles at Amarchand Mangaldas and S&R Associates, where he focused on dispute resolution and capital markets.
Beyond his practice, Sarna is an active scholar and researcher. He has held fellowships at Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin and at Oxford University’s Bonavero Institute of Human Rights. He also completed a study visit to the European Court of Human Rights, engaging deeply with European human rights jurisprudence.
An accomplished author, Sarna co-wrote From The Trenches, offering insights into landmark legal cases, and has contributed numerous articles on environmental law, climate change, and judicial reform to newspapers like The Hindu, Times of India, Indian Express, and others.
